When You Tell One Lie

With apologies to Paul Hatch…I always disliked this jingle.

When you tell one lie, it leads to another
So you tell two lies to cover each other
Then you tell three lies and, oh brother
You’re in trouble up to your ears!

So you tell four lies to try to protect you
Then you tell five lies so folks won’t suspect you
Then you tell six lies and you’ll collect
A life filled with worries and fears

‘Cause you can’t remember how many lies you’ve told
And half the things you say aren’t true
And sometime you’ll slip up, you’ll trip up and then
Whatever will become of you?

So you lie and lie without even trying
And each lie you tell will keep multiplying
‘Till the whole wide world will know you’re lying
Then you’ll be
Suspected
Detected
Rejected
Neglected
Disliked
And you should!
When you lie, you’re closing the door
On everything good

You are obviously lost in the art of sarcasm.

OK, I guess I’ll have to spell it out. “When You Tell One Lie” was the theme song used in a series of Latter Day Saints public service announcements 15 or 20 years ago. I forget the exact storyboard, but it starts out with a kid telling a lie. By the end of the 30 second PSA he’s told a dozen lies to cover his tracks and is now being chased by mugger-looking dudes wearing masks chanting the above song.

As a young child, it used to freak me out. Not the lying part. That part was OK. I wanted nothing to do with these “Latter Day” freaks who would chase down a small child for lying.

guess I was too tired to get that but it makes total sense now… anymore when “deacons” show up at my door, I just ask to see their holy underwear… and ask them if the reason they are on missions is because they couldn’t find a wife fast enough… usually they stammer enough for me to slam the door in their face.. LOL..

I remember this annoying song! The kid in the commercial lies and tells his mom he is going to a friend’s house to study, but he is actually sneaking down an alley on the way to the movies when the scary Mormans in black show up and start snapping their fingers and singing. He’s so distraught after the song that he blurts out the truth to his mom and promises never to lie again.

This song was orginally part of a series. It was actually a series of books and music called “Standing Tall” not a commercial or propaganda, in an attempt to teach children values. I love this song and at almost 30 years old, I still have never been able to get it out of my head. It made an impression on me as did other books in the series and I am saddened that now out of print, my child will not have the same great lessons I had that taught my integrity and values.

Aha! Thanks for the quick history lesson! :) I always thought it was written for the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints spot.

I remember this commercial very well, and it was kind of creepy and even scary. You could almost expect it to air right after school. Its like they knew we spent half the day telling lies. But it was very memoriable, and wish I had copy of it to show to my children.

holy crap, I used to have nightmares about this commercial from the latter day saints. It had some painted faced mime in an abandoned house from what I remember.

I just want to say that even though I never saw any of the public service announcements, I had tapes of the obedience and honesty “standing tall” series in which this song and songs like “who broke my window?” were used, and they were fabulous! I loved them! And not once do they talk about church or mormons or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It’s not a cult, and in the case of the not creepy at all casettes, I would think it could be useful for kids! I liked them and still throw em on to laugh at at 22 years old ha

I used to love listening to the tape that went along with the book. I still remember the song. Everytime that I thought about telling a lie, the song came into my head. I’d do anything to find the book and tape again to give to my 3 year old. My brother had the Dependability book/tape. That was a fun one too! D-e-p-e-n-dability…..

Using fear and intimidation is a wonderful way to teach people lessons. Especially children.
